Faculty & Director
Merit’s teachers are unparalleled due to two key criteria:
1. Their academic expertise in the subjects they teach, and most importantly...
2. Their ability to inspire, challenge, and guide students to reach academic excellence.
Course preparation at Merit Academy is quite extensive, requiring that lessons are shaped and refined to meet student needs. Teachers are active in course development, working with the director to pinpoint the skills needed for success at the college level and to develop the pedagogy to build those skills.
Merit Academy’s college advisory counselor, Susan Tatsui-D’Arcy, M.A., is also the school director and founder. Since 1979, she has founded and directed numerous organizations, including Professional Tutoring Programs, R.E.C. Day Camp and Ski Club, the Enrichment Program, Merit Educational Consultants, and Merit Professional Organizers. She is a published author currently working on several books centered around education, time-management, parenting, and college admissions. Her educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Santa Clara University, and a California Teaching Credential. Her vivacious energy and vision make Merit Academy one of the top university-preparatory schools in the country.
Susan Tatsui-D’Arcy believes it is important to stay involved with students and faculty, making sure that the students meet their goals. As the director of the school, she meets with the students every week to help students improve and maintain their study habits and time-management skills. She takes pride in coaching students individually on how to improve their study skills to ensure their success in each class.
